Strikeforce: Miami complete fight results
The California based promotion, Strikeforce, hit Florida for the very first time on Jan. 30 at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise with a twelve-bout fight card that included two title fights as main events.
Nick Diaz faced Marius Zaromskis for the first Strikeforce Welterweight Championship and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos defended her title against Marloes Coenen.
Jay Hieron faced Joe Riggs to determine the #1 contender in the welterweight division. Hieron won a unanimous decision and earned an upcoming title shot against current champion Nick Diaz. Although the fight was not on the televised card fans were able to watch it on EASportsMMA.com via a live stream at 9 pm ET. Unfortunately, it was later announced via twitter that the broadcast would not be possible due to feed issues.
Bobby Lashley made his successful Strikeforce debut and remains undefeated after a first round TKO against a completely out of shape Wes Sims. Lashley quickly took Sims down and pounded him until the referee stopped the fight. Sims was clearly unhappy with the stoppage and he was still upset when he provoked Lashley during the post fight press conference, maybe looking for an instant rematch.
Herschel Walker won his MMA debut but nothing has been decided yet about a potential second appearance. The former NFL champion dominated Greg Nagy throughout the fight until the referee stopped it in the third round. Even though the 47-year old athlete’s performance was not outstanding, Walker proved that he has decent enough fighting skills and is still in good shape.
Melvin Manhoef was not able to finish Lawler quickly. It was in fact Lawler who landed a devastating right hand and knocked Manhoef out cold.
